MA-MA carries layered meanings: an abbreviation (‘Master–Master’), a name for mother across cultures, and a primal sound in the formation of language.

MA-MA is the exhibition of first- and second-year master students from the Applied Arts and Design programme at HDK-Valand, Campus Steneby. The works represent a diverse group of material-based makers and designers within the Metal Art and Wood Oriented Furniture Design specializations.

The exhibition brings together these makers at distinct stages in developing their individual languages through practice. Each is engaged in the process of giving form to thoughts, ideas, and experiences through explorations of materials, techniques, methods, and contexts.

Through this exhibition, we invite you to take part in a collective moment held between the first and second years of the programme when the work enters into being and is to be experienced. Individually, the works reveal a range of voices: makers defining their own languages, shaping form as a way of understanding and being in the world.
