Woodoriented Furniture Design 180 hec
This programme is for anyone whose goal is to work with design, product development and manufacture of furniture for the furniture industry today and tomorrow. It will provide you with the tools and knowledge needed for future work with in a company or on your own.
Field trips and visits to trade fairs, furniture companies and design offices are a continuous part of the programme. The studies are carried out in project form based on a general community perspective, such as how furniture functions in public spaces like libraries, schools of various offices. Nor is the home setting left out.
The three-year, full-time programme includes courses in Furniture Design, mainly using wood, Visual Interpretation and Communication, as well as Theory and History. You will work on projects using investigative, formative and reflective methods in studying public and private contexts in both fictional and actual situations. Advanced knowledge about wood provides you with cutting edge competence, while you also gain a broader understanding of other materials. As you work, you discuss the future, seeking new formulations for use and life quality, as well as arguments for new design.
All parts of a design process are on your curriculum, including design methodology, sketching techniques, setting up drawings and making mock-ups and prototypes.
In the area of Visual Formulation and Communication you will develop an investigative attitude to form, material, concepts and context, while training in visual and oral communication, as well as using digital and analogue techniques.
The first year will provide you with knowledge about different materials with a strong focus on wood, as well as teaching you how to understand and develop a work method.
The second year focuses on projects studying the surrounding world in public and private contexts, with human needs as the focus.
During the third year using method, interpretation and communication will become more advanced.
After finishing the programme, you will receive a Bachelor of Fine Art. You will be prepared to work as an entrepreneur, take a job in a design or architects office or seek work in a manufacturing company.
Note! On first cycle (bachelor level) the main teaching language is Swedish, however Steneby is host to several international students and teachers. A summary of the different projects and courses will be given to you in English. You will also have tuition in English.
