Textile - Garment - Design

This programme is intended for anyone wanting to work with textiles as it relates to people and surroundings in differing forums, one of which is the performance stage. The programme enables you work with fashion, textile design, and art and crafts as an employee or entrepreneur.

The three-year programme is project based. Each project focuses on the explorative, progressive and developmental, and reflective processes as they pertain to both public and private settings. The programme offers a breadth of different textile techniques and materials that increases in depth and complexity throughout the programme.

You will have access to well-equipped facilities where you can expand your knowledge in areas such as pattern construction, knitting, sewing and seaming, weaving, textile printing, embroidery, dyeing, theory, history as well as visual development and communication.

In the visual development and communication subject area, you will develop an exploratory attitude to shape and form, materials, concept and context, as well as receiving practice in visual and verbal communication in both digital and analog media. You will gain perspective and inspiration for your work through guest speakers, workshops and field trips and will be able to see as it relates to our surroundings, our time, history and theory.

The first year focuses to a great extent on projects exploring textile materials and techniques as they pertain to both skill and expression. Throughout the process, you will be encouraged to reflect you relationship to the problems of design and the project subject matter. In the projects you will learn to use an exploratory methodology in the artistic process, as well as to communicate your choice of methods.

The second year entails longer projects that broaden your knowledge and your personal developmental process in differing contexts and their relationship to the presence.

The third year allows you to expand your knowledge further through your own formulated projects that extend your knowledge in the subject area, design and projects of your own design.

The spring semester ends with a 10-week independent project.

After finishing the programme, you will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts. You will be prepared to work as an employee or entrepreneur within the areas of fashion, textile design, art or arts and crafts after the successful completion of the programme.

Note! On first cycle (bachelor level) at Textile-Garment-Design the main teaching language is Swedish. We recommend you to have good knowledge in Swedish. However Steneby is host to several international students and teachers so a summary of the different projects and courses will be given to you in English. You will also have tuition in English.
