Steneby - Artistic projects, production and development

Steneby - The School for Craft and Design

Steneby - The School for Craft and Design is a school under the learning environment umbrella called Steneby.  This includes Stiftelsen Stenebyskolan, a university preparation and vocational school owned by the Västra Götalandsregionen and Bengtsfors Komun, “Steneby Bibliotek” (library) and “Steneby Konsthall” (Art gallery).  It is located approximately one hundred and fifty kilometers north of Gothenburg in an area known as Dalsland.  Today, Stiftelsen Stenebyskolan has ninety-four student spaces in its university preparation / vocational programs, seventy university course places in its BFA and MFA programs and ten free standing course places for special topic courses.  Steneby is a robust cultural center in the Dalsland region and continues to receive strong support from Västra Götalandsregionen regional development department and Bengtsfors Komun to develop the cultural and learning environment; this includes support for developing a research environment, internationalization, entrepreneurship, and as a meeting place – nationally and internationally.

History:
“Stenebyskolan”, a school that was started by Erland Borglund in 1934. His aim was to create a school where hand and mind were equal, a strong basis for craft.  Stenebyskolan’s courses grew and developed into longer educations, some leading to Journeyman’s certification. Steneby became a part of the University of Gothenburg in 2000, under the The School of Design and Craft (HDK) and the Artistic Faculty, the name at this time was HDK Steneby.  At that time, some of the educations were transformed into artistic bachelor and master educations - what are now three material based departments and one common MFA program. In 2010, Steneby became a full institution directly under the Artistic Faculty.    The school had its first bachelor exams in 2000 and its first master exams in 2002.  While the bachelor programs have continued to develop since this time, the master program underwent an interval without operation from 2002 to 2004.  In 2010, Steneby will examine its fourth group of master students.

Research strategy
Steneby has just started its research activity. Its research group is formulating a research strategy. Research at Steneby is characterized by artistic production and artistic development projects (KU).  The school’s rural location and specially equipped technical facilities create strong possibilities for artistic research related to craft based materials (wood, metal and textile based), and collaboration with society – local and beyond. Our developing strategy includes building a research environment by: hosting seminars, developing an artist in residency program and creating advanced-level part-time courses for artists / practitioners / teaching staff who may prepare for further research.
