My name is Jeff Kaller and I am the Rektor at Steneby – Stiftelsen Stenebyskolan and Steneby - Institutionen för Konsthantverk och Design.

My background is in ceramic art and teaching.  My practice in ceramic art, like all the educations at Steneby, is a material based practice that involves knowledge in material, skill in handling the material and investigation through it.

I came to Steneby for many of the same reasons our students come here.  We have a long history in material based artistic educations with wood, metal and textiles.  Steneby is specialized, its depth of education offers a range programs, from foundation courses designed to prepare students for entry into university and work, through university education offering BA, MA, special topic courses.  We work with many traditional materials and techniques at Steneby and we continue to develop the use of these materials and techniques.  Our students demonstrate that we have new things to say with traditional materials and how we have traditional skills to work with new ones.  Our studios exceptionally equipped – some with resources unmatched in Europe.  Perhaps the most important aspect of Steneby it is a critically engaged and focussed environment where there is time to work, time for creative exploration, and time for learning.

Statement
Jeffery Kaller

Central to my art making is the exploration of materiality and the activity of process as it relates a human condition.  Setting up a systematic framework into a grid-like structures focuses my inquiry in a manner that embraces my concerns, thus allowing content and associations to be inserted and the unforeseen revealed.  Inherent are intersecting layers of abstract associative meanings, time, growth, decay, physical states of matter, expansion, contraction and scale; engaging work walks a line between these associations.  I allude to images of architecture and models of physiology and geology.  There is an exchange of information that occurs when ceramic is fired.   Pyro-plastic transformation of the work in a kiln is out of my sight and immediate control.  These fantastic material changes offer new pieces of vital information.

My recent work draws upon the funnel, or cone form.  I use the form to allude to both natural and human-made information. The cone is a form found in various forms of physiology; they have also been appropriated to describe geometric principles and to gather material, direct it, and channel it into smaller openings, i.e. the funnel / cone.
