Iron and Steel / public space 180 hec
Artistic expression comes in many different sizes. If the larger format is your goal, especially using iron and steel in public spaces, our programme offers the foremost conditions in northern Europe for providing you with the necessary foundation. Our 1200 sq.m. smithy is the perfect venue for a varied, 3-D, experimental artistry.
Through larger and smaller site and space-based practical, craftsman-quality projects, you will gain the knowledge that provides you with the possibilities for future professional, artistic work as a freelance artist working with private and public principals. These will often be actual projects and/or contests working with principals and exhibitions.
The programme is a three-year, full-time study sequence that includes courses in visual configuration, communication, theory and history.
In the first year you will learn advanced knowledge in technique, material and expression. Process-oriented work forms will help you develop your artistic attitudes. You will gain an oriented understanding for continuing discussions in art, arts and crafts, design and public commissioning. You will be asked to work with projects founded in one function and related to the character and use of a specific site, as well as gaining skills with text and picture in the form of a portfolio, PM and reports.
In the second year you will segue to larger projects, accentuating independent studies. The first two years your work will mostly continue to be in project form where the technical, material and functional demands are related to spatial and interpretive problems.
The third year will allow for more space for individually formulated projects focussing on contemporary projects and working in consultation with the professor, teachers and supervisor.
Your results will be shown in several public venues, including Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde and Wij Gardens. The spring term concludes with a ten-week, independent graduation project with a clear focus on public spaces.
In the area of Visual Formulation and Communication you will develop an investigative attitude to form, material, concepts and context, while training in visual and oral communication, as well as using digital and analogue techniques.
After completing the programme, you will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, enabling you run your own artistic operation with exhibitions and commissions from private and public principals.
Note! On first cycle (bachelor level) the main teaching language is Swedish, however Steneby is host to several international students and teachers. A summary of the different projects and courses will be given to you in English. You will also have tuition in English.
